BGS Meeting 20th January 2024

Nine members of the society met tonight, welcoming a new guitarist who joined in with the ensemble playing. We hope she will become a member.

Jim led us in tackling new pieces which might be suitable for our entry in the Reigate Festival in May.

  • Farewell to Stromness by Peter Maxwell Davis, arr. Cornelius Bruinsma. This piece needed close attention with changes from 2 sharps to 5 sharps and back again; changes from 6/8 time to 2/4 time and back again; two 4-bar repeats; plus Guitar 4 needed to retune the bass E string down to D.

  • Questa Notte by Ludovico Einaudi. Seeming to be more straightforward, this piece included three 4-bar repeats and two 2-bar repeats. When we are more familiar with the piece we will need to bring out the strong variations in dynamics.

In the break, David supervised refreshments as well as collecting society subscriptions for the half year.

Tonight’s solos were played by -

Janis Fesde da rianne
Derek Mexicana (Peter Nuttall)
Marion Valse Noble (Peter Carlson)
Jim Study No.11 in Emin (Fernando Sor)

The ensemble returned to Questa Notte, and then we found our way through Valse Venezuelienne, a traditional tune with off-beat entries for some players, and repeats which tripped us all up.

Our 2024 sessions are held on the third Saturday of each month . Do join in !

On February 17th the session will include our Annual General Meeting which, David has promised, will be very short !

The session in the following month will be on Saturday March 16th.
