BGS Meeting 21st April 2018

A very full programme tonight, so we settled quickly to work on our ensemble playing.
Fourteen of us warmed up with sight reading two arrangements for four guitars, then
John worked us through a four part arrangement by K Love of Salut D’Amour by
Edward Elgar. Lots of dynamics and ‘rits’ to be observed in this piece.

After a tea break, we were joined by three visitors, and welcomed Kevin Daniel Cahill
to give a masterclass and recital. David played Un Dia de Noviembre by
Leo Brouwer.

Shaun played Torija from Castles of Spain by Federico Moreno Torroba.

Kevin suggested and demonstrated the use of more ‘space’ in music and how to create variety of tone, colour and dynamics on the repeated notes and phrases.

Then Kevin introduced his two solo pieces – Equinox by Toru Takamitsu, and While We’re Young by Wes Montgomery – illustrating what a versatile instrument the guitar is.

Tom gave us a solo, Deep River, a Negro spiritual arranged by Jim Skinner, playing on
his new guitar made by Rob Sellery.

The evening was rounded off by a couple of runs through of Salut D’Amour which is
coming together nicely.

For those that missed it, you can see Kevin performing Equinox in this brand new video from Open Strings Berlin:

See you in May! Please visit the Current Ensemble Repertoire page to see the pieces we are currently working on.
