The six-string Spanish guitar, the forerunner of the modern instrument, became popular in Germany around 1800 as a portable alternative to the pianoforte; Carl Maria von Weber is known to have played it, and Franz Schubert may have done so as well. The songs in this concert are chosen from those by Schubert, Weber and Louis Spohr published at the time with guitar parts, presumably with the composers' approval. David Miller also plays guitar solos by Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806-1856), a Hungarian guitar virtuoso active in Vienna. Stephen Varcoe is one of Britain's most distinguished and versatile baritones, with more than 125 recordings to his name, ranging from Purcell, Bach and Handel to Nigel Osborne and John Tavener. He is also the author of several books on singing and is in great demand as a teacher and lecturer. David Miller is one of Britain's busiest lutenists (he took part in our performance of Monteverdi's Orfeo in 2007), and also plays a range of other plucked instruments, including the early nineteenth-century guitar.

Dear friends,
I am giving several solo lute recitals in May in the UK and Germany. My programme features music from the greatest English lute manuscript, the Matthew Holmes book in Cambridge University Library, which dates from the 'golden age' of the lute at the end of the sixteenth century. Composers include Anthony Holborne, John Johnson, Francesco da Milano and of course John Dowland. I do hope you'll be able to make it to one of the concerts, and I look forward to seeing you.

1. LUTE SONG CONCERT, CAMBRIDGE, SUNDAY 12Th JULY

‘Had we but world enough and time’ concert of Cavalier partsongs, by Wilson, Locke, William and Henry Lawes, plus on or two Dowland and Purcell songs, depicting the life of a cavalier in an hour of music; Jeni Melia and Helen Price, sopranos, Chris Goodwin, lute, theorbo, baritone. 3pm St Bene’t’s Church, tickets on the door, £12/£9.

2. THYSIUS LUTE BOOK REMINDER

Dear Lute Society member,

The Dutch Lute Society has been able, after years of talking about it, to publish the famous Thysius Lute book , one of the few preserved Dutch Lute books, compiled at the beginning of the seventeenth century. It is the world’s most comprehensive Lute book, with more then 500 pages of lute-music and about 900 pieces of all sorts, in French tablature.
It varies from a broad international repertoire to Dutch song-tunes, from pieces that are easy to play to more complicated music.

The Dutch Lute Society is able to sell the book for € 98,- (excluding package and mailing costs), but only until the 1st of September! After that, due to the agreement with the co-editor, the Royal Society for Music History of the Netherlands (KVNM), the price will be €140,-, with a reduction for members of 20%.
The publication consist of three hard-backed volumes, held together by a box.

3. PURCELL / MENDELSSOHN CHORAL CONCERT, LONDON, THURSDAY 16th

You are warmly invited to the Giltspur Singers’ Summer Concert, Hear My Prayer, which will feature the music of Purcell and Mendelssohn, who were born 350 and 200 years ago this year, respectively.
The concert will take place at 7.00pm on Thursday 16th July at the Temple Church.
The programme will included some well-known and some not-so-well-known choral pieces by both composers, including their settings of ‘Hear My Prayer’. It is a great privilege for us to perform Mendelssohn’s setting (with its famous solo ‘O for the wings of a dove’) in the Temple Church, where Ernest Lough’s renowned recordings were made. Other pieces will include Purcell’s dramatic Jehova, quam multi sunt hostes and his deeply moving Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our Hearts; and secular partsongs and sumptuous double-choir motets by Mendelssohn. In additional to the choral music, there will be a performance of a Purcell trio sonata on recorders and chamber organ, and Mendelssohn’s 3rd organ sonata.
