It was good to see players back from their holidays, and we
were delighted to welcome some visitors who will we hope become members.
Sixteen players were present. The ensemble worked on four pieces tonight:
·
Ojos Azures, a Chilean folk
song, arranged by Lee Sollory. As this was straightforward John asked everybody
to play all the lower three parts together to make us aware of the structure
under the melody.
·
Schottisch by Franz
Schubert
·
Minuet by Boccherini,
arranged by K Love
·
The Sage Leaf from The
English Dancing Master, arranged by Andrew Forrest
Time for a well deserved tea break – thanks again to Trevor
for supplying and serving refreshments.
We had the following solo's:
Tom | Alba De Tormes, from Castles of Spain (Torroba) |
Andew (on lute) | A Port, (Trad. arr. James Pickering) |
Andrew has previously played lute music on guitar or lute guitar, but tonight used his
beautiful newly made lute. He spoke of difficulties in tuning the lute and challenges in
playing as the strings are closer together than on a guitar. He also is reading lute tablature. The evening ended with more work on The Sage Leaf.
The Society’s AGM will be held on 15 September.
